The Studio

One room, one machine, and every print checked by hand before it leaves.

Prints are made, trimmed and checked here, on the table, in daylight, before they go anywhere near a frame.

The Printer

One printer. One machine. Every print made by the same pair of hands.

Vincent van Graan trained as a photographer and ran the fine art printing department of a professional Cape Town lab for fifteen years, printing for David Goldblatt, Pieter Hugo, Daniel Naudé, Thomas Peschak, Jo Ractliffe and Roger Ballen among others. In 2012 he set up his own studio, today in Sun Valley. Nothing here is outsourced or batched: your file is read, corrected and proofed personally, then printed on site.

Voices

“Vincent has been responsible for printing my global photographic exhibits and fine art images for over 20 years. I trust his impeccable taste and expert eye implicitly and cannot recommend him enough.”

Thomas P. Peschak

“I first started working with Vincent during his time at ORMS, when they started printing digital silver. I was living in Johannesburg so managing distance was tricky, but Vincent was always ready to accommodate my schedule and with a warm professionalism. Shortly after I moved to Cape Town, he established a new home-based business around the corner from where I lived and we have been working together ever since. Most of my editioned work is silver gelatin, but my exhibition prints are inkjet Baryta prints. As such, it's really important that we match these as closely as possible, not an easy task, but Vincent is wonderful in the way he goes all out to meet these requirements. There was a period when I was working on a book, while in hospital. Vincent would make visit after visit bringing proofs, and we would turn the ward into a makeshift studio. On other occasions, he has all but performed all-nighters when faced with an urgent print request. I really value his reliability, work ethic and not least of all, his professional expertise. That he manages all this with an open-hearted generosity is rare indeed.”

Jo Ractliffe

“Vincent van Graan is an expert in the field of fine art printing. His knowledge of this subject, both printing and image editing, comes from his own experience and training as a photographer, and his expertise has been honed by years of practice in the field. He is calm, kind and patient in stressful moments and will always complete the job on time.”

Svea Josephy

“Vincent van Graan does work of the highest quality. His skill and attention to detail is brilliant. He is easy to work with and always has great suggestions. He always goes the extra mile. I recommend him very highly.”

Craig Foster

“Vince is an outstanding printer and a wonderful human being. The wonderful human being part is very important to me as I much prefer to work one on one, it's more personal than working with a big company. Together we meticulously work on each print until it is perfect. That process wouldn't be fun with someone you don't get along with. As for his vast printing knowledge, he is one of the best I've ever worked with. He is able to see things that elevate the print to its highest possible quality. And if it's not perfect, he will keep going until it is. As a photographer it's important to have someone that you can fully trust with your images.”

Gary van Wyk

“I worked with Vincent in his capacity as printer for the best part of a decade. Vincent is a master of colour, Photoshop and preparing files for print. He was the expert printer at Cape Town's main lab during this time and so he has consummate knowledge of the printers and machines as well. Vincent was always generous with his time and true gentleman. I can recommend Vince without reservation.”

Dave Southwood

“It was always a great pleasure to print with Vincent for a number of years. His in-depth technical knowledge of various printing systems combined with a deep aesthetic sensitivity to make him an ideal printing partner. Prints were always delivered meticulously and timeously and I would thoroughly recommend his services.”

Mikhael Subotzky

“I've worked with Vincent for several years on image preparation for limited edition archival prints. He is exceptionally reliable and consistently goes the extra mile to help meet demanding deadlines without compromising the quality of the final result. His understanding of how images translate to print is invaluable, and his creative input has often helped anticipate and solve challenges before they arise. Vincent is also flexible and collaborative, adapting as projects evolve while always remaining thoughtful, responsive, and meticulous. It's a pleasure working with him, and I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for an experienced and dependable image editing professional and printer.”

Jonathan Gray

“Vincent Van Graan is someone I could rely on to create my photographic prints without me being present. His care, passion, creativity, ability to stick to deadlines and work with complicated shipping requirements was exceptional. He is someone you can rely on with very little instruction. Through the years I also found him to be a compassionate family man which speaks to me about character.”

Jodi Bieber

“We have been printing our work that requires the highest standards for international exhibitions with Vince for the past 8 years. During this time Vince has always been great to deal with, attentive and prepared to go that extra mile to make sure we get the world class product we require. We can only highly recommend Vince!”
